Additional Information

Sexual assault has a number of different forms including rape, incest, assault, and molestation. Sexual assault is about power and is used to teach the victim that their body is not their own often leading to a profound sense of loss of control. No matter what type of sexual assault is experienced it is important to remember that it is never the victim's fault, ever.

It was not your fault. You are not to blame.

Statistics:

-320,000 sexual assaults every year in the United States alone

-Up to 10% of the victims are males

-94% develop PTSD

-Lifetime prevalence of PTSD in sexual assault survivors is up to 50%

Sexual assault costs $450 billion a year and rape is the most costly crimes to it's victims, estimating $127 billion annually. As of 2008, each rape cost $151,423. Sexual abuse negatively impacts education, success, job performance, and earnings. Sexual assault survivors have an estimated lifetime loss of income of $241,600. Sexual assault not only effects a lifetime of income but also the ability of a survivor to perform their job with an estimated 50% of all survivors having to leave their job in the year following, most often because of symptoms of PTSD.

PTSD can take years to recover from and has a profound impact on quality of life. Sexual assault survivors who develop PTSD often develop anxiety, depression, and struggle to maintain any sort of 'normal' life. The effects on personal and professional well-being can be staggeringly negative as well.

PTSD costs over $42 billion dollars each year in misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and indirect workplace cost. Sexual assault is the most frequent cause of PTSD in women. Those who develop PTDS have some of the highest healthcare costs, that can be lowered significantly with proper treatment and support

Recovery is possible

Recovery is possible. There are different types of therapy such as exposure therapy, EMDR, and cognitive behavior therapy, all of which have been proven to be successful. In addition, early social support has a profound positive impact on survivors. Therapy is highly recommended as it helps survivors process what happened and slowly move back into the world in a functional manner. However, therapy usually stops there.

Life Coaching:

At this point life coaching becomes a great resource for people who want to make changes within their life. It is proven that life coaching makes a significant difference in the overall satisfaction of one's life and is an effective approach for personal development and goal attainment.

So now what...? You've seen a therapist, you feel better about yourself and life, yet you're still in a job that you don't really care for, or in a relationship that isn't amazing. You still live in the city that you've been thinking about leaving for a while now. What is stopping you from making those changes? What is stopping you from finding your freedom?
